Hi-
I'm totally new to linux...
I've been trying for like 2 weeks to get my @home working.
I'm running the latest version of Corel.
I'm 99% sure that the NIC is detected/working..

Could anyone give me instructions on how to get @home to work, and understandable to a newbie? heh..

Thanks :)

During the install you should have been asked to configure your network, with DHCP or MANUAL. Which of these options did you select?

If you didn't, you should have picked dhcp. It gathers information from the dhcp server so that you don't have to specify it manually

You didn't supply very much information.
Do you have another machine that works with @Home?

Ping 127.0.0.1 to see if the network drivers loaded OK.

Cable modems bind to the MAC address of the NIC card that they are connected to. If you are plugging a different machine into the cable modem you need to power off the cable modem to clear this. Plug in your linux box nic and power everything on.

Reinstall and follow the advice given before about dhcp and it should take care if itself.

Good Luck,

I'm going to tell you the opposite of what you have been told. Set your IP manually, you may have to reset it occasionally by hand, but being a veteran of several @home installations, dhcp doesn't work a lot of the time. If your IP is static or relatively static this will be your best option. Email me if you need any assistance, I can't promise you anything, but I have helped a whole lot of people get their @home working. After a while it becomes second nature. You can also do a topic search in this forum for @home and it will display several. The first few times I had to deal with it, that is where I found all the answers. I would suggest a man file, but those things give me a headache so you are better off doing forum searches IMO. Have fun and good luck.

I noticed alot of you are using dhcp for @home,or can`t connect. Also a lot of docs I have read are wrong,so heres the skinny.I got from a freind @home Dhcp is badd for any operating system using cable broadband Why?
Static ip you connect to gateway server it logs an oks your ip once, then your routed threw one of 2 name servers.=Less abilty for for isp to watch you!also your about 3% faster.

Dhcp you connect threw you isp main server (which is a monitored server)it checks an logs your ip for every connect, and wherever you go to keep the ip adress correct ,then threw your gateway, then your nameservers. Why is it monitored so you have the correct dhcp ip adress everytime you login or connect to a website.

Useing Mandrake 7.2 or later or Red Hat 7.0 or later.this tip works with others Dist too.Try these settings:

Mandrake like this

First turn off dhcp
Next unplug your modem

c789898-a.ca.la.home.com
dns 1 23.34.89.100
dns 2 23.34.89.101
dns server a.ca.la.home.com
net mask 245.245.245.1
gateway 12.12.12.1

In Red Hat your host name need to be like this
First turn off dhcp .
Next unplug your modem

Then run netconfig

c789898-a
net mask 245.245.245.1
gateway 12.12.12.1
dns 1 23.34.89.100
dns 2 23.34.89.101
dns server a.ca.la.home.com

Lastly for both start to reboot then plug your modem back in!
For some people don`t have docsis complient cablemodems this will up cap you.<----- now thats just too badd uncapped speed+cablemodem!

i am shocked no one answered his question :)

welp
the quickest way to get the cabel runnin would be

su to root

open a command line
type

dhcpcd -h your host name (your host name is the name givin to you by the @home service

eg. CxXXXXXXX

so dhcpcd -h CxXXXXXXX

take about a second or to to return a prompt
then ping somebody
if u got a responce then your on the net

oh and u should do some deamon control

due to the fact that you are on a persistent connection

if u do not disable certin deamons u leave your self open to attacks

the deamon files can be found in

/etc/

they are rc.d etc

LNO has a NHF on it u can read it here
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/security/securehome.html

read it follow it do it

i cant stress it enough i have seen a cabel system get hit with in 45 seconds of connecting

if the dhcpcd command doesnt work u could be useing the wrong moduel
so double check that to (im sure u have though)

but if the NIC is in and working the dhcpcd command should work

I am using Mandrake 7.2 with cable modem, and I got it to work by just changing the host search path to search the dns first, not the /etc/hosts then dns.

We haven't heard back from the originator of this thread for nearly 2 days. Perhaps it's fixed?

Well...
Whenever I try to get dhcp working in linux, with most of the instructions people have given me, it ****s my modem for 7-12 hours, so I can't get on... It's sooo strange...

I did a poste about that too.

Got your attention...

Sometime it's nice to know if any of the suggestions are working. That way we can get an idea of what is going on.

I'm going to try it either later tonight, the suggestion from MovingTarget...

I want to do it late so that I'll be sleeping while the modem is down, if it goes down...

Thanks to everyone who's given suggestions.

Oh, and oddly, the NHF for Corel and @home was... well, the area for the line that I needed to edit was there, but the line wasn't. Well, whatever.

Thanks :D
