I am using FC1 and alsa drivers 1.01 or something close to that. I like to use arts because of the good multi channel support, but now that I've just reinstalled FC1, arts causes a CPU overload and crashes. Why could this be? My sound works now, but when I'm using xmms, I cant hear gaim or anything else. Is there a way besides arts to use multi channel sound. Oh, by the way, I think multi channel is the right word to use. I don't mean like 5.1 surrond, rather full duplex, so more than one program can make sound at the same time.

Intel i810. I think I forgot to mention that I just reformatted and reinstalled FC1, and everything worked fine before that.

From the Alsa site:
By default KDE uses artsd to mix sounds, but since we are using the
dmix plugin this is no longer necessery. artsd holds the device in
such a way that it blocks any other programs from generating sound
output (unless they have an artsd plugin) which causes programs like
xmms, xine and even alsaplayer to just hang.
You probably have found this already, but you might want to investigate your asoundrc file configuration.
Go Alsa (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php3?vendor=vendor-Intel#matrix) (click on i810 details)
