For example how do I get xpdf to launch when I click a pdf file in kfm? IdunnoNL 03-19-2001, 04:28 PM If I'm right this is not possible, In unix/linux an extension like .exe or .doc doesn't mean much. Therefore, a certain document is not associated with a program. I think that's good! TheGimp 03-19-2001, 04:45 PM have a play around in /opt/kde/share/mimelnk bdg1983 03-19-2001, 11:35 PM It should be all explained in the online KDE help files or else it's also in the FAQ's at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) silvershin 03-20-2001, 12:55 AM :If I'm right this is not possible, In unix/linux an extension like .exe or .doc doesn't mean much. It is possible to associate files with extension. Like my rpm files are associated with kpackage. :have a play around in /opt/kde/share/mimelnk I've tried this. I right-clicked on a lnk and opened properties. There's a tab called Bindings where you can choose a program to launch a file type with. Problem is, there are only 8 or so apps to choose from. If I can add applications in that list, it would solve my problem. :It should be all explained in the online KDE help files or else it's also in the FAQ's at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) I went through several documentation already, including the ones in kde.org, but to no avail. bdg1983 03-20-2001, 01:32 AM I know the documentation is there... Start the KDE File Manager (KFM) and pull down one of the toolbar menus (forget which one) and you will see options for mimelnk. Use that for setting up associations. Startup the KDE online help (or whatever it is as I kinda forget now) and look for mimelnk. Should explain how to do it. bdg1983 03-20-2001, 01:43 AM Took me all of 10 seconds to find this at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/configure.html#AEN1972 silvershin 03-20-2001, 02:11 AM Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm using kde 1.1.2. The docs in kde.org is about version 2.x and it is quite different. bdg1983 03-20-2001, 02:16 AM I still use 1.1.2 and you get to 'mimelnk' from the KFM toolbar menus as I previously posted. I've had to fix a couple of mine after I installed Helix-Gnome. I've also created a couple using the same method. silvershin 03-20-2001, 03:05 AM first of all, thanks for being patient with newbies like myself, mdwatts. but I have a couple of questions more about the subject. do you edit the mimelnk files manually or through the dialog boxes? and while I'm at it, do you think it's worth it to upgrade to kde 2.1? thanks again silvershin 03-20-2001, 04:23 AM I did open the properties->bindings dialog on the mimelnk files. But like I mentioned in an earlier post, there are only 8 or so apps in the Default Application drop-down menu. I can't figure out a way to add to those. I also tried opening the mimelnk files in a text editor to edit them manually. I replaced the DefaultApp value but it did not seem to have any effect at all. bdg1983 03-20-2001, 08:04 AM Had to get some sleep as I'm on EST. Note that this is from memory. Isn't there a New/Mimelnk besides Edit/Mimelnk? Also, I seem to remember 2 references to 'mime' in the same toolbar menu. Should you upgrade to 2.1? I did upgrade to 2.0 on one of my PC's at work a few months ago and I wasn't all that impressed. But from the comments I've read here, it is recommended. silvershin 03-21-2001, 08:28 AM There's mime and global mime. The mime directory is empty and I tried creating a new link. However, they pop out the same dialog box. Well, thanks anyway. I just made Gnome my default desktop. justlinux.com
