I have a Toshiba PCX2000 that Cox cable sold me when I signed up for cable modem service.

I want a friendlier cable modem to use with Linux, if the modem really matters (my thought is that the LAN card is the big issue--any cablemodem that connects to the LAN card should work). The Toshiba took a lightning hit last year and has never worked with the LAN card since (new LAN card and new computer so I'm sure the modem or the modem cable is the culprit).

I can get a 3Com CMX2940 for $15... which sounds good to me. Reckon this'll work?

Thanks,
Mike

I too had the Toshiba for a while with my Cox account, and it was a wonderful piece of hardware. Never a single problem that couldn't be traced back to the ISP. However, if you LAN port is broken, I highly recommend getting a new one, since most USB Cable modems don't play well with linux.

HOWEVER, (and this is my personal recommendation) whatever you do, stay away from the Motorola Surfboard. I have had nothing but trouble with the one provided to me after my Toshiba. It randomly drops connections all the time, and it doesn't play nice with a router. The 3Com should be fine, just don't go with a Motorola.

Now, how do I get off of this soapbox...?
