FYI to all.

I thought I saw a thread related to this problem some time ago, but I can't find it now to post this in it.

At any rate, according to the UK's linux magazine (Jan. 2004), the initial release of Mandrake Linux 9.2 had a bug concerning certain LG-based CD-ROM drives. The kernel in this release sends a "FLUSH-CACHE" command to the drive, which overwrites its firmware and makes the drive inoperable.

MandrakeSoft made it clear that ALL installation methods were affected and that the problem was not only linked to booting from CDs - even using a boot floppy or network installation will trigger this bug.

It looks like LG is using some ATAPI commands in a non-standard way and (surprise, surprise !) that can result in problems.
