I never thought it would be free but Solaris 9 is. You'll have to fill out some stuff though. Haven't done it myself.

I have another question.

Do i download all 3 of these files and then burn them as an ISO?? Solaris 9 x86 Installation CD Image, Multi-language (sol-9-u5-install-x86.zip, 377.51 MB)
Solaris 9 x86 Software 1 of 2 CD Image, Multi-language (sol-9-u5-x86-v1.zip, 269.41 MB)
Solaris 9 x86 Software 2 of 2 CD Image, Multi-language (sol-9-u5-x86-v2.zip, 330.18 MB

I'm also using a 56k dial up modem for this.

i dont believe that BeOS is freely available for download, but you can check out the openbeos project at www.openbeos.org

I also tried looking on google for step by step instructions on how to install BeOS 5 Personal Edition but couldn't find any. Does anyone have a link on instructions on how to install it with this version of BeOS?? Thanx everyone..

If I'm not mistaken, BeOS PE is actually started as an application through Windows. Once the application is started, it shuts down Windows and begins loading BeOS. I believe you just unzip the file and go from there...

But, as far as the Solaris install goes, I think that you actually need all of the CDs. I installed it on a SPARC machine I've got, and I think I recall it asking me for all of the CDs. I'd imagine the x86 version would be the same way...

For BeOS use this one. It's PE which was originaly just a Demo, although it can be installed from inside BeOS. The link I posted. Is PE with a bunch of updates, the main one being Athlon and Pentium 4 fixes. BeOS PE will not boot on these two Procs with out the patches. Also you can install off the Cd.

Thanx for the link. I have a few questions about that link for BeOS. Do i need the CD when i install BeOS?? Or will it run without the CD after i install it and partition it?? I'm downloading BeOS 5 PE Max Edition V2 at the bottom of the page under Intel. Is that the right one to download for a Compaq Windows computer?? Will u give me instructions on how to install it and partition it?? Thanx..

56k. Oh wow. You really need at least the first two. Without the first two, your not even going to complete the install if memory serves. I have never installed Solaris Intel...but I have Solaris 9 Sparc and I needed two discs. Solaris 9 is quite nice BTW.

I'm using GetRight download manage so if i get cut off it will leave off where ever i got cut off at. I'm not going to download direct with a 56k modem then i will get cut off and start over again.

I used to use getright. Worked pretty good. Good luck. BTW...did you check your hardware to make sure it is compatible? Solaris 9 is a bit limited in terms of PC hardware support...so if you haven't checked you may find it to your advantage to do so.
