I want to make a distro including the newest kernel, gnome and xfree.

Anyone got some ideas how to set this up?
How many people should i include in the project? 20? 30?

What exactly does the distro do? Is it purely for communicating with the user? Do i have to make my own tools like rpm and printool?

If you haven't yet, check out linux-from-scratch (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org). This should give you a decent idea of setting up a basic Linux system without using a pre-packaged distro. Slackware (http://www.slackware.com) is a do-it-yourself sort of distro you might also want to work with first. Slack allows the user to do most everything manually, and doesn't sugar-coat anything.

A distro(bution) is just a collection of software containing the Linux Kernel, assorted applications, games and utilites. The distributers decide what to include and how to allow the user to install, update and manage the entire bundle. You can set up your distro to support any/all of the packtools (rpm, apt, pkgtool) available. Although including all of them may be overkill ;)

The options are only limited by the license(s) of the software you choose to include.

Good luck
