Does anybody know how to mount a usb stick in Mandrake 9.2?
I know that useally mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb/ is working but in 9.2 there is not any /dev/sda* .

what the device is and if it is detected, is to check /var/log/messages

If you see something that says USB-HOTPLUG device is scsi blah blah, then you know that it will find it as /dev/sdxx if you have another usb storage device attached, that would be /dev/sdax

So check that first, perhaps even post it and I could help you further

I tried the usb stick in knoppix and i didn't have any problem. Knoppix mount the stick in /dev/sda1 .
In Mandrake i ran dmesg and the results (some of them, i skip a few) were :

So

ls -al /dev/sda*

does not show any sda devices at all?

Do you have the required scsi emulation and usb modules loaded?

lsmod (list loaded modules)

You should have something like

sr_mod
sg
scsi_mod
usb-storage
usb-ohci
ehci-hcd (for USB2.0)
usbcore

These modules are loaded:

usb-uhci 25136 0 (unused)
usbcore 74988 1 [ehci-hcd usb-uhci]
ide-scsi 11376 0
scsi_mod 106176 2 [sr_mod ide-scsi]

AHA!

You'll need usb-storage loaded too, IIRC.

As root

modprobe usb-storage

G4L search results for 'loading module' (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=loading+module&btnG=Google+Search).

As a suggestion, read the relevant manpages.

man insmod

man modprobe

man lsmod

man modules.conf

With modprobe usb-storage i loaded the module.
But i can't mount the usb stick again and the module does not load on boot.
How can i put usb-storage to load on boot?

I am searching in google too :)

Did you try taking the stick out and plugging it in again? Did you get the same messages this time? Also, do other USB devices work?

I took the stick out and i had the same messages.
I don't have any other usb devises.
I only tried with a usb wire. Usbview found this one but it's a usb storage device...

Try these JL forum search results for 'usb stick' (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=863366&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) to see if you can find out what modules are required and hopefully other troubleshooting ideas.

www.linux-usb.org .net? may help.

Problem solved with the help of http://www.linux-usb.org and it's FAQ.
There was a problem with ACPI.

Thanks all for your the help :)

Actually another JL member suggested this morning in a USB mouse thread to disable ACPI as that is known to sometimes cause problems with the USB mouse. Didn't think to post here for your USB stick.

As long as you got it fixed and glad to see the linux-usb site helped.
