I saw the post on the main LNO page about solaris 8 being available for download. I was wondering if anyone had taking advantage of it, and if so, any thoughts they might have. I was thinking of trying it out myself. I'm already running debian and mandrake...and I still have win98 that I use every now and then.

let me know what people think of solaris 8

thanks

Depends on what you want to use the system for.
Solaris is ALL business, mainly just for the server side, although some basic workstation functions are there.
Linux programs won't work on it unless you get lucky with some jury-rigging - hell, I have trouble getting Solaris programs to work on it now and then.
Plus, it's fairly tough to learn, even compared to Linux. A lot of the same basic commands are there, but the syntaxes are almost all different.
If, however, you are among us that hope to eventually get into a career dealing with Unix, it's a good one to learn. It's one of the "Big Dogs."
(I'm currently learning it to get certified right now just for that reason... personally, I like Linux a LOT better... but Solaris is more marketable, and tends to pay more).

...Got it yesterday...

...I'll install later today...maybe...

...get it to boot..try to make lilo boot it...dick around with it for while...
...pretty useless to me all in all...just a challenge and an ego thing....
