what good 3d modelling software is there for linux? I want to install gentoo but I don't know of anything that can replace 3d studio max for linux

Check out Blender (http://www.blender.org). It's awesome and getting better all the time.

To see some examples, check out the forums on Elysiun.com (http://www.elysiun.com).

-Waylena, who got into Linux because she was looking for a way to make Blender and POV-Ray run faster.

Offhand I don't know of any except for the ones included with my distro (SuSE 9.0 Pro). I've never used them, so try these freshmeat.net search results for '3d model' (http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=3d+model&section=projects&x=0&y=0) as you may find one you like.
