My aim is to set up Gentoo-based systems with a GUI as simple and stable as possible with minimal hardware requirements. Unfortunately the level of ease of use that is needed can only be found in Gnome and KDE. Of the two KDE is somewhat slower and heavier but the bigger problem is probably its menus. They have way too many options. I ended up trying Gnome 2.4.

I came across these problems that I would hope someone could help me solve:
1. The logout button does not work some times. I have seen this occur with Gnome 2.4 from gentoo and the 2.2 that comes with SuSE 9.0. Nothing happens no matter how many times I click it.
2. The "loading" screen can sometimes remain on the screen after everything is loaded. It will go away when clicked upon but this causes confusion so it needs to be eliminated.
3. gconfd consumes way too much memory. After having a brief Gnome session with some browsing using (the excellent) ephiphany and a some terminal windows I logged out and checked memory usage. The system had 128Mb RAM and it had used the same amount of swap. The process on the top of the list was gconfd.

At least the first needs to be eliminated if Gnome is to be used.
I'm desperate! If my project ever succeeds, Linux will gain tens if not even a hundred new users! If not, the points will most likely go to Bill. :(
Any advice please!?

look into XFCE4... It is a stripped down Gnome.

I already have and although it looks good, it can be "messed up" by accident rather easily. It also doesn't have desktop icons. What I would like in xfce is a feature to glue the panel in one place.
