I installed RH9 on a pentium-pro desktop from Gateway. It runs painfully slow. It takes maybe 5 minutes to load a shell window, 10 minutes to logon and so forth.

During the installation, I did try to install a generic desktop system. I never had problems with RH7.2 running KDE and other "intensive programs".

Is there something with RH9 that I need to check? How can I track this issue.

I also installed a RH9 on a Thinkpad which does not have much better hardware than my Gateway, but it runs effective for me.

Try running a lite window manager, like fluxbox or something similar.

My guess is the hardware. If I remember correctly the minimum hardware requirements for GUI Fedora are 400mhz cpu and 192 mb for ram, which I'm guessing your system doesn't meet. Graphics card memory has much to do with it also. The newer Red Hat distros really are power whores, so I would suggest going back to what works or try a new slackware release.
