I was thinking of trying Debian, Mandrake is kind of pissing me off. I still like Mandrake, but I felt like trying something new. Maybe with Debian I will learn Linux better.
Has anybody used that O'Reilly Learning Debian, that comes with a cd??? I was wondering if that was a good way to learn Debian, and if the cd that comes with it any good??
Also I have Win98 and Mandrake 7.2, dual booted, would there be anything I have to do to prepare my comp?? Should I uninstall Mandrake and just put Debian on the partition Mandrake was on, or do I have to re-partition???

Thanks for any help.

I was in the exact same position a while back, and am I ever glad I switched.
First off, there ARE books for learning Debian out there, and if you're not quite confident with your linux system yet, then I'd really recommend picking one up. I made it fine without one though. My RH 6.2 book saw me through enough things, and debian's online documentation is excellent. Post a few questions here, and we'll get you going :)

As for the Win98/Drake thing, just rip Mandy off of your partitions and put Debian back over it. That's what I did and it worked great :) Be warned though...Debian isn't nearly as user friendly or graphical as Mandy.

when I first installed debian I was a bit disappointed with the selection of packages available. A lot of them seemed really outdated.

Then I switched to Sid. The "unstable" version of debian. I don't think unstable is really the right way to describe it. It seems to be rock solid 99% of the time.

Only problems I've had it upgrading to broken packages. If you watch #debian on irc.openprojects.net you can avoid installing packages that are broken.

I love it.
