I have no clue why the hell Linux is doing this but if I boot or reboot into Linux I lose my mouse (along with some other things, like menu additions, etc.). I can fix the mouse problem easily enough by running the mouse configuration program and then restarting X... BUT!

If I reboot again I'll once more lose the ability to use my mouse.

Needless to say this is incredibly annoying.

I'd like to have my mouse work every time without having to run the mouse configuration tool and restart X after every boot. I'd like for changes to my KDE menu to STAY in there. There are probably a few other things that probably should stay the way I modify them but they haven't made their presence obvious.

I suspect ReiserFS. For some reason it might be rolling back to a previous system state at every single boot. I tried running the reiserfsck program but I guess that didn't work as my problem still remains.

This is quite a new problem for me and it took me by surprise. Any help or at least some info on what the heck is going on would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know about ReiserFS, but I might be able to point out two other problems:
Re: the menu thing. I had the same problem on a Mandrake 8.0 install, due to a buggy version of gnome-core. Download the latest. Try getting the latest version of KDE (are you using beta)?

Re: the mouse. Mandrake 8.0 also liked to reset my XF86Config after I had edited it (to put NVIDIA drivers loading as modules).
Try:

chmod 644 /etc/X11/XF86Config

okay I did the chmod thing and rebooted.

It didn't work. I still lose my mouse. ='(

And I doubt the menu thing has anything to do with Gnome. I only have KDE and Blackbox installed on my system. And KDE is a shiny 2.2.1... no beta or pre-release or anything.

This is really driving me nuts; I've never had this happen from a fresh Mandrake install...
