I'm using the 2.4.3 kernel

Do I have to do anything to my bios?

Do what do i have to turn on in my kernel?

What should I have off in my kernel?

I have the lp thing that caldera uses and its worked on old kernels, and I see things like epson800 start or smoething like that when i boot... i'm to sure why it isn't working... i don't get errors when i compile my kernel... all seems to go well, but i still think i have something setup wrong.

Thank you for the help

Did you recheck your kernel config?

Anything at Caldera's knowledgebase or http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm and there is also the Caldera news groups here (http://www.mail-archive.com/users%40lists.calderasystems.com/) that may help.

Just in case, I'll take the goat. Got a good recipe.

In order to use your lp port (which the printer daemon needs), you need to have three things enabled in the kernel config:
Parallel Port -> Parallel Port support
Parallel Port -> PC-Style Hardware
Char Devices -> Parallel printer support

Those need to be enabled (or loaded as modules) for userspace apps to have access to your printer port.

Hmmm... i tried it so that those three were the only ones on (printer/parallel related) in my kernel... i tried them as modules... I tried the same things as above with the IEEE thing... I tried the consol printer thing... I tried the one that translates to "generic scsi... but for printers"

I send something to print... nothing happens... my printer doesn't even give me a funny look. I have it through a zip drive... I'm going to try a reboot with out the zip hooked up... but i don't want to do that all the time. I have the lpr*** thing from caldera install (I've tried with the old and the new one) and when I do the ps aux... i see printer related thing in it.

thanks for the help... happy passover.

Try taking off the zip and plugging the printer into the back of the parallel port. Does the zip drive work? As I recall, there was a special option you had to have enabled to use a zip drive.

Yes the zip driver works... i have my fstab setup to work and I have the ppa on in my kernel.
