Every single distro I have ever used hangs during the installation except mandrake 7.2, but mandy sucks ***. I want to try out this libranet 1.8.2, its debian based. but i get this error message when it is detecting my devices...right away it happens:

scsi: <fdomain> Detection failed (no card)
NCR53c406a: no available ports found
Sym53c416.c: Version 1.0.0
Failed installation of WD-7000 scsi card!
IBM MCA scsi: No Microchannel-bus support present -> Aborting

I'm assuming it has something to do with me not having a scsi card. I also get a similar error when attempting to install slackware...grrrrrr. Red hat hangs on the L in lilo(but that has something to do with it not being b4 the 1024 cylinder, i just need a newer version of lilo that is okay with that) and caldera hangs at the very beginning when detecting hardware as well....

I want to try out Debian and Slackware...possably suse, but I can't if the damn installation hangs right away....

anybody have a clue as to what i can do to fix this? It boots from the cd and goes the the libranet how to thingie, and you press enter to boot, or enter commands of various sorts, and then it detects stuff, and gives that error message above.....

Someone please help me,
Matt

Nothing for sure... but maybe a couple things to try:

If you've been trying to install offa CDs, try a network or floppy install?

Check install docs for the different distros to see if there is a boot disk you need with drivers for some piece of hardware you have?

If everything hangs, I'm thinking you have some unique hardware. That really sucks.
You might try Debian install from floppies (it doesn't have to be from floppies...it's just a name for a very small install). It gives you a lot of power over what you want in your kernel and doesn't do as much hardware probing as other distros do. Give it a shot. http://www.debian.org/ I'm damn pleased with it :)
I don't know for sure, but rumour has it that the older versions of the debian install don't probe for hardware at all, and let you specify what you have. Might wanna look for them then upgrade.

Could you tell us a little about your hardware?

One thing I can tell you -- the "can't find SCSI" error is probably not what's making your computer hang. I get that message every single time I boot my Debian system, and it always continues past that point without a problem.

If the SCSI message is the last thing you see, then whatever the next item is, is probably the culprit. If you can get at your bootup scripts and figure out where the SCSI detection is and what's after that, then you'll know what you need to focus on.
