seattle wireless (http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/HardwareComparison) is a good place to check out hardware. I use G cards with the linuxant driver wrapper- Dlink, Linksys, and SMC all work with them.
For pure linux compatability, the Orinco cards are good but hard to find and pricey.
The chipset is the main thing to look at, the model numbers stay the same but they change chipsets all the time (i.e, Dlink 650 versus Dlink 650+). Search around the forums, most brands have been posted.

For the laptop- SMC 2835 which is a G cardbus card.
For another PC, the Linksys WMP54g PCI.
These both use the linuxant driver wrapper (since the $20 cost of linuxant was cheaper than a new card and took about 30 minutes to install).
This site apparently has a driver that will work with the SMC card now, but requires a kernel patch.
