process management

I've just been wondering. Under the Process Managment why is there multiple entries for a program ie. xmms or star office. This is more curiosity than anything else.

I have no idea. I can tell you that it's normal though. I'm also interested.

I think it has to do with some of them being child processes of some primary process (eg. one process starting up others, but they all have the same name)

So for example I see something like
xmms four times and each one says it is taking up 2% in memory. Does that mean that each one takes up 2% or just the program as a whole takes up 2%.
Just an example.
