Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Laptops with Linux installed
Hello.
I'm conducting some sort of survey, and I would like to know if you've got laptops with Linux as the primary OS installed. I'd like to know the laptop brands/models, the Linux distro installed, and if there's any problem with any hardware at all.
Thanks.

Toshiba 1415-S173 Mepis Linux Everything works except the operator-he likes a lot of naps. :)
(This isn't one of those "help me recover the Nigerian national treasury and 10% will be yours" surveys is it?)

HP ze4560us with Suse 9.0. Runs great, including the built-in wifi using the Linuxant driver loader.

Inspiron 8500 with MEPIS Linux. Kernel patched for processor frequency scaling and installed acme to bind the multimedia keys (so it wasn't always at full volume--yikes!). Had to add a widescreen modeline for the 1680X1050 screen resolution. There are plenty of how-to documents for this laptop which helped greatly.

Dell Latitude C600. I have run both Mandrake 9.1 and Slack 9.0 w/no problems.

Maxxdata Laptop.
Athlon XP 1800+, 256MB RAM (Full specs in sig).
Gentoo Linux is the only OS on the machine, though it came with Windows XP Home, which was deleted and returned for a refund on the day I bought the machine.
It works pretty much okay. No 3D acceleration though, but I think that support will be there in the future.
Also, every time I close the lid, putting it into standby, I get no sound once it comes back out of standby. I have to do a /etc/init.d/alsasound restart to get the sound back.
No major problems though, since the machine is used mainly for work anyway.

IBM thinkpad a22m and winbook x1
both running slackware 9.1
everything works great except the winmodems but then i never really put much effort into that...
I'm typing this from an old compusa brand laptop that my brother gave to me. I had some trouble initially getting my wireless card (belkin f5d6020) to work correctly as there was a conflict between the io ports assigned to the wireless driver and the ati driver in xfree. I solved the problem by changing some of the ioport includes in the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file. No problems with that at all anymore.
However, I'm still having problems with the mouse and keyboard. Unpredicatably, the mouse and keyboard stop functioning. I know its just the mouse and keyboard because I can still ssh into the laptop remotely when the problem occurs. I've discovered that if I do a "cat /dev/psaux" and then ctrl-c the process, both the keyboard and the mouse both start to function again. This seemingly pinpoints the kernel code causing the problems, so I'm going to try and figure out (and if possible correct) the misbehaving code. As a temporary solution, i've added a "cat /dev/psaux &" to my init scripts, which seems to additionally prevent the problem from even occuring. Very bizzare...
I guess I can't really complain since I got the laptop for free, but it is kind of frustrating.
system specs on the laptop:
brand: compusa
model: ??? (not stated anywhere on case)
mobo: clevo 260/290
processor: p2 300mhz
ram: 96mb
video: ati rage lt pro
sound: ess maestro 2e
wireless: belkin f5d6020 rev2

I have a notebook that is based off the ECS Green 732 spec at www.ecsusa.com that runs Mandrake 9.1 excellently.
I had to edit some rc scripts to get the wireless card to work correctly, and I'm having a little trouble with the CDRW drive, but most everything else works like a charm.
Anybody got any tips on how to get the CDRW drive to work correctly. It is detected correctly and set up as a CDRW but K3B just refuses to work with it... (Actually I haven't been able to get XCDRoast to work either...)

I've had Linux on quite a few Dell laptops, including real old ones. Dells (lattitude and optiplex desktops) have always worked with Linux for me. I currently use a Toshiba Satellite T1910 486sx33 wtih 12mb ram as a caching DNS, and playground HTTP server for static pages box, and a Dell XPI P133 with 48mb ram as a portable QuakeWorld and file server for LAN parties.

I am running RH9 on a compaq Evo n800c.
Everthing seems to run fine except the power management stuff (It uses ACPI and I haven't got the ACPI kernel stuff). Although before XF86 loads I am able to change the brightness of the screen and even turn it off, but once X loads then it will stay in that state (Very annoying if the lid is down at the time). Also the CDRW drive seems to not behave very well with xcdrost (makes alot of coasters)

Came with 2k, deleted as soon as I recieved it :D
Runs Debian sid now :)

Running Mepis Linux on a HP Pavilion ze5354 (http://www.foswell.plus.com/ze5354notebook.html) (dual booting with XP pro)
P4 2.ghz 512mb ram 40gb hdd
Mepis installed right away with no problems,
However Mandrake & Red Hat both have firewire driver issues with this machine.

Compaq Armada 1750. SuSE 9.0, although I liked it a lot, gave me the trouble of shutting off whenever it felt like it. Never figured that one out. Tried Debian, but only kept it long enough to make the obligatory joke about the 'uptime of my Woody'. Running Slack9.0 now and it's solid like a rock. Sound didn't work at first, but I went HERE (http://www.magiex.netfirms.com) and found out how to fix it. Nothing more than a little editing /etc/modules.conf. Forgot to add APM support, so it doesn't shut itself down when I pass the poweroff command, and LILO doesn't work correctly so I have to boot from the boot floppy, but those are my fault and can't be blamed on the OS.

HP Pavilion ze5375us dualbooting Fedora Core 1 and Win XP Pro (of course, the Windoze is just on there to keep my Best Buy warranty active :p )
Only problems are ACPI and the fact that I have a Conexant winmodem
Even got my flash drive to work (when I ran RH9 it worked once then froze the OS up after plugging it in every time afterwards)

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT815E (a european model, similar if not identical to the PCG-GRT170, PCG-GRT896).
I installed Debian unstable on it. No real issues. Sound, networking, cd-writer etc. work (haven't yet tried the dvd-writer). 3D acceleration works too with the NVidia drivers (patched version for the 2.6 kernel).
You however have to boot the installatino cd with the "bf24 noapic" option. Then when the base install is bone boot the same cd. but in rescue mode with "rescbf24 noapic" to finish install (running taskel and dselect, etc..) and finally before rebooting, add "noapic" to the "append=" line in lilo.conf.
Now I just have to get around to installing the sonyp.io kernel module and power-management...

Dell Inspiron 4000 with Mandy 9.0
Everything works flawlessly: Video, sound, modem, network, and I have read that the hibernate and hotswap even work with some effort.

Sony Vaio PCG-XR1E/BP
500 Mhz, 256 RAM, internal CD-RW
It's a Jap version (lots of extra funny keys!) bought in Hong Kong for big discount...
Mandrake 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and Slackware 9 all worked like a charm. It's amazing, windows ME and XP had lots of trouble with stability and especially the modem, while the Linuxant Rockwell driver work flawless and was a much more stable system in general. Even hibernate and teh ACPI stuff works. Don't have a digital video camera to test the Sony Firewire port though.

I have an old Toshiba Satellite ( 333mhz Celeron I think and 64MB ram) running Slackware 9.1 fine. I havent tried wireless or anything, just pcmcia. No problems at all. Iused to run Redhat7.3 but I ran into problems with the pcmcia card.
I dont run X all that much on it, but WindowMaker runs fine.
dell inspiron 5150
p4 ht 3.06 ghz
nvidia go
mandrake linux 9.2 (kernel 2.4.22-10mdk)
everything works except for acpi support... which means that I can't ht support until i can find someone who has recompiled to kernel for stable acpi support.
i'm also using the linuxant driver for my broadcomm based wireless.
