I have a p5-133 with 64 mg's ram and a 2 gig hdd. It is a very small (physically) box. No cdr. I've created some linux boot disks with lynx however I can't seem to find the info needed for a net install or even if one is possible.
Does any one here know or have the info?
Thanks, in advance...
:)

Net installs are available for almost every distro I believe, which distro were you looking into?

anything that will run window maker and is a very small distro, so as to conserve disk space.

The bare Debian netisnstall is about 30 meg and then you can pick and choose what else to install (also over the net) Apt looks after all net install stuff. Excellent program. :)

I haven't done it myself, but here are a few resources (note that some of these methods involve downloading files to your hard drive, and performing the install from there. With only a 2G drive, this might not work for you):
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/ftpinstall.html
http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst
http://www.redhat.com/download/howto_download.html
http://www.linuxhelp.co.za/mandrake71/install.htm#other

You can get more info by doing a Google (http://www.google.com) search using a keyphrase similar to:
"network install" linux floppy

You may want to try VectorLinux (http://www.vectorlinux.com/Qinst.htm), it has some zipfiles that you can install from DOS...a good small distribution.

Go to the debian website, download a couple of floppies and start the install. It will pretty much walk you through setting up a connection to get the files you will need. 2 gig is more than enough.

do you have a network card in the box? if yes, and its supported, a debian net install is identical to a cdrom install (booting off floppy).

just go here (http://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.26-2001-06-14/images-1.44/) and get the proper disks. all the info you need is on debian.org,here (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-install-methods.en.html).

note: the only disks you need are the root and rescue disks. so get root.bin and rescue.bin, and rawrite or dd those images to floppies. if you have any of these NICS (NE2000, 3com 3c905, Tulip, Via-Rhine and Intel EtherExpress Pro100), look in the compact folder.

I'm gonna give debian a try on the net install. However can this be done with redhat too? :D
