Greetings,

I am a Solaris admin and rarely use Linux for sound applications. But I have been fed up as of late with other OS's and decided to run Suse full time at home. My sound card is a via ac97 chipset. Suse install recongnized it right away, the modules do show as being loaded. I cannot get sound to come out though. Does anyone know where I should start to fix this? dmesg doesnt show any conflicts, and it shows that it loaded the mod.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Greetings,

If the ac97 module comes up when you run "lsmod", then it is loaded. One thing to check is permissions to /dev/dsp <-- sound device... you may not have permissions to it if you are operating it as a standard user.

Also what program are you using with your soundcard? XMMS? If you are using ALSA drivers (which I don't think you are) you may need to increase the volume through the ALSA mixer.

/usr/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/ has a SOUND howto in it... give that a read too.
