Ok, this is for every windows user that loves the great Linux but
he/she stays in windows only for MS Office and other basic stuff as
Explorer and Outlook Express etc.

Consider VMWare(I have no connection with them), a program you can find at
VMWare.com and lets you run Windows in a Linux Window! It runs REALLY fast
on my AMD Duron 600 running Windows XP in Mandrake 8.1.

Actually mouse response is faster in Linux running Windows than in windows
alone!

The LINUXformat magazine, suggested that this incredible mouse response is
due to high preformance of the latest Linux Kernels.

Anyway, vmware.com offers a GREAT solution of all our MS Office etc.
problems.

Please believe me, MS Word runs FASTER.

It's amazing.

ps1. I repeat, I have no connection with them.
ps2. This is the last time I mention this here :)

Do you still need to have a Window's partition in order to use VMWare? Or do you secretly create an FAT filesystem in a directory like ~/win that is apart of the ext2 or reiser-something partition?

You can have it either way you like.

I use ext2 for efficiency, having created a "virtual drive" on a file.

VMware did this automatically and I assigned 4GB for it so Windows XP and MS Office have plenty of space.

You can also use a "raw partition" which is a normal NTFS/FAT32 partition I suppose.

I have both on their separate partitions and am happy with that. I personally don't use XP to "just to use MS Word" I use it to view media files and to download music video files faster with Morpheus than I can with LimeWire or other such programs.

sarah31 - get Kazaa for Linux. It is the same as Morpheus (same servers) and it's text based, which means no popup ads. www.kazaa.com (http://www.kazaa.com)

Thanks Jomboni I will lok into it. Can you recommend a good DivX player. I have used AVIFIle but it stalls all the time. Why spend money Windows? I don't. You may as well arrest me now because I rarely by any software at all!

cheeky_zombie - that's my theory. I already own Win2K and have it installed on a separate partition. Why spend more money so I can run it from within Linux as well? As it stands most of what I do under Windows is gaming, and since you can't install DirectX under VMWare, it's not really good for that.

Oh, and for DivX players, I can't really help. I got divx video playing under xine, but there is no sound. It's a start!

Have you installed all the Windows dll files. I know that there is a package out there that has all the DivX codecs. The sound translators in there may help! And for Kazaa, does it grab from multiple users like Morpheus.

As for the original thread I might be tempted to use VMware but I really don't like the x within x stuff (virtual windows, etc)I just don't trust them (based on experience).
