I am recently new to Debian, and noticed that kde didnt come with it. Is there some reason for this such as incompatiblity that I should know about before I try to install the new kde desktop? Oh yeah, I am running potatoe 2.2r2 kernel 2.2.18.

Yeah . . . the reason KDE was not included with potato was because, at the time, it did not conform to the Debian team's standards for free software. As it now stands the "problem" code that KDE uses has now been released by the Trolltech company under the GPL and is now considered free software by the Debian folks. Some of the details here may be off but the situation as described above is why KDE was not included with potato. There are no fundamental incompatabilities and there are folks out there maintaining apt-get compatible sites for installing KDE on Debian(try checking www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) for leads). Good luck.
