Nobody's Hero

I have a laptop that I use almost exclusively for my computing needs.
I also have an aging PII 400 Mhz, 128 MB Ram sitting on the desk in my room.
I would like to use the desktop as a file server since I have a 200 GB, an 80 GB, and a 20 GB hard drive filled with goodies (I really take advantage of my cable modem and subscription to giganews).
The desktop has sshd and sambad configured and running. I tried mounting my shares over the network and playing some movies and mp3s over the network, but it was too slow.
This was attempted over my wireless LAN. If I run ethernet cable, that will obviously improve speeds and I'm willing to do that. Will that be fast enough to do what I want? If not, how can I set this up correctly?
