OK..... I've searched and found a couple of threads...

http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=108478&highlight=dhcp+doesnt+work+in+knoppix

and

http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=101301&highlight=dhcp+doesnt+work+in+knoppix

and no luck so far......

I've been running Knoppix 3.3 on my laptop for a few weeks and it works fine for the most part. The problem is that I cannot get a dhcp address on my NIC. Let's me elaborate. If I manually enter an address it works fine. Alternately, if I am somewhere with a wireless connection I can get a DHCP address on it automagically without user intervention. It's only the specific situation that the NIC (wired) doesn't work with DHCP.

An ifconfig reveals that the eth0 device isn't listed. Only lo. If I "up" the device ifconfig says "UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST" but I won't get an address. I tried the Knoppix network configuration utility and it fails when you try to get an addy via DHCP. If you config manually (as I've said) it get's an address and works fine. Also let me clarify, when I say it doesn't get an address that's what I mean, not "I can't connect to the internet", it isn't getting an address and maybe I have a dns issue or anything. It really DOESN'T get an addresss (someone woulda asked in the first response if I didn't clarify).... but I digress...

I tried dhcpcd as root (via a post I searched). The command is not found. I ran dhclient as root. Not found. I tried " /etc/init.d/network restart". Not found. "netconfig" and "netcfg" commands are not found. I've played with the "pump" command as root. That command IS there, but always returns "Operation Failed".

Additionally, the problem ISN'T with my DHCP server. I have 3 other PC's (2 Winders, 1 RH9) on my network here and all of them properly get all DHCP info. For the record it IS a hardware DHCP server, not a software server. Eventually I will start running dhcpd, prolly on RH, I dunno, I am building another box for firewalling / modem router / DHCP but it's not ready yet (Case requires SPECIAL psu fan).

Thanks for all answers!

Okay.... I headed over to the www.knoppix.com forums and tried the following command as root:

mii-tool -r

It didn't help.

I also tried to boot with the "noapic" switch.

It didn't help.

Any tips here?

Come, somebody hook-a-noobie-up.

I know the original message is long. I did that to make sure I didn't leave anything out. :)

Sir Ron

i'm having the same prob wether its win i'm running or linux (except in win even if i enter manually it still doesn't work) i think the reson why no one is answering is cuzz people are polite around here, i'm new too and you have to read the rules i learned and it does show you've done research but what mita happend is this topic was recently discused or is somewhere located in the help files. so they give you the silent treatment i guess trying to teach you to look around, i acutly found your post when i was searching the fourms to answer the same question. kinda stinks that noones answered it otherwise i would have my prob fixed by now too, but if you do get a answer if you don't mind pm with a link or somthing, and if i find it before u i'll rember to pm you.

well i searched the fourms didn't see much one looked like it would be the right answer but a reply asked him if he could put out some error info there was never a reply after that. anyway i guess i'll just post my question here insted of making it worse by having 2 threads.

ok so basicly i have mepis and know nothing, now that thats over with. i know little about networking but the prob i face is about the same as his it worked for a while but now it suddenly quit, luckly i copyed all the ip info from the old xp install i had. so going into system i was able to manuly enter in the ip sub (what does that do) the gateway (what does that do?) and it worked and thats how i'm posting this. (i'm not a total loser) so i acutly manage to get the dhcp address if that helps any. well this is my prob, my ip won't be recozied auto witch i really want it too sence i plug into differn't networks offen. now my parents have a 2000 box and they can't get a ip from dhcp (i don't know how to enter it in manuly. but they can network so if i plug them into the router (which is what they like) they can configure the router ect. so why not do that? well the router now has trouble getting dhcp its a d-link wired. if i could manualy enter in the dhcp address i could probly get the router to get online but it won't let me do that all it lets me do is reless and renew, so i reless and i renew and the page just keeps refreshing coming up with 0.0.0.0 any help would be great thanks!

I tried " /etc/init.d/network restart". Not found.

It's /etc/init.d/networking not network.

What are you currently using for a DHCP server?

what do you mean what are you currently using? i thought there were some global ips that you comp used to get its ip assinged. i use wow and i never had a prob like this in windows unless i started pluging stuff into differn't networks, but now after restarting the modem and repluging people in the router has found a dhcp server and every windows box here then i try it with my linux box and nothing, and it usta work dhcp style but just quit on me.
