I just upgraded my old GeForce 2 to a GeForce Fx 5700. I am running Suse linux 9.0. I installed the card booted and the video is all fuzzy. I tried sax2 but that is the same problem. I can't find a good way to get my X86Config file into here in firebird ;(

Is it fuzzy while X is running, or does it do it at a console too?

Might be the card is sending some type of signal that the monitor can't handle... or something.

Just in X.
When it starts looks like really bad video caset white noise.
I am currently reinstalling and hoping that will fix it.

I assume you're using the nVidia driver...

Huh. I'm not really sure. :(

I tried reinstalling and still no go. The nvidia graphics card configuration util picks my card up as a Nvidia 0x0342 instead of a Nvidia Geforce FX 5700. I was reading and a newer version of X supports the card properly. How can I tell what version is installed? Does upgrading X break anything?

Only the newest experimental XFree86 4.3.99.902 supports the NV36 chipset :( So should I upgrade?

i've got the same card running perfectly under mandrake.....using the latest experimental drivers from nvidia did the trick for me......check out the nvidia linux forums here for more information:

No matter what version of X you use, you'll only be able to use the 2D capabilities of your card. You need the nVidia drivers to get 3D, and those are probably what don't work with that new of a card.

Try the betas, as liquidfx13 pointed out, or wait a bit until nVidia comes up with a non-beta set of drivers. (I expect that this will be pretty quick, since 2.6.0 is now stable and the stock nVidia drivers won't work with it, but of course I don't work for nVidia so I don't know for sure.)

No, No, NO!!! The basic 2D support does not work. When I hit "test" it has a really bad vsync problem. Line 2 is ten pixles left of line1 one. It has a really nice stagering problem. Directly from the Relase notes of 4.3.99
The nv driver for NVIDIA cards has been updated as follows:
* Support added to the nv driver for the GeForce FX 5700, which didn't work with XFree86 4.3.
I also read that the beta nvidia driver works with this card albeit not very well. I would not know how to set it up since I have always used sax2 to this.

You may want to consider rereading what I posted. :)

I said "no matter what version of X you use, you won't be able to get 3D" -- or at least, this was how I meant what I said. It is possible that I didn't word it very well.

But I did not say "2D will work regardless of what version of X you run".

If you upgrade X, you will get decent 2D support. But you won't get any kind of 3D support for that 3D card, which (IMO anyway) makes it a bit of a waste. Before you can have 3D, you need to be using nVidia's drivers, and those drivers work on any version of X newer than 4.0.2.

nVidia's latest non-beta driver (4496) apparently does not support the NV36's yet either, though. For that you need to either wait until they release the next non-beta driver, or you need to get the current beta (see the nvnews forum link for how to get it).

As for how to set it up, the README distributed with the drivers is quite good.

If you read my post I am not saying 3D does not work, I am saying my card does not work. The XF86 does not support this card in 2D. I did eventually find the beta nvidia driver and install that. Now my card seems to work fine.
