you mean sound effects??? i believe it is turned off by defauld except for startup & shutdown, you can change that in prefrences...

if you are having problems with audio for music, CDrom & mp3s, mpegs etc... you probably need to open the mixer and turn the volume up, mine was low too untill i turned up the sound mixer, i guess redhat does that so people arent shocked by too loud of a audio setting when first used...

The music CD plays fine but there was no starting tune at the beginning of the kde.

Is the KDE_startup.wav enabled? Check the KDE Control Center under Sound/System Notifications/KDE System Notifications/KDE is starting up and see if the startup.wav is checked. At least that's how mine is accessed using KDE 2.2.1.

The system sound of kde was checked but the test sound only worked once out of several times. And the starting (welcome) tune of kde has never worked. But maelstrom had sound and Cd music was fine.

I have another machine, and sound works perfectly.

Where can I find the wav file you mentioned?
