I'm running Mandrake 7.2 and updated the kernel. My problem is with updating XFree86 to 4.0.2. I downloaded all the .tgz (the ones for my system) files and Xinstall.sh from xfree86 site. I backup my old X* directories, I run the script. I answer whatever the default is for the questions. As the screen rolls by, I see something about can't make a link to something. The script runs ldconfig and create some links for some of the *.so files. Afterwards, I cd to /etc/X11. The contents of this directory looks totally different than my original /etc/X11 directory. For one thing, the file prefdm (I think that's the name, I'm not sitting in front of my linux box right now) is not there, plus an assortment of other directories are missing.

Anybody can help me out here??? Thanks.

So other than the different appearance, what is the problem you are having? Did you remember to re-run xf86config? Once you did that, did you copy the XF86Config file to XF86COnfig-4?

When I first tried, I got a 'cannot link such-and-such a file'. Being as absent-minded as I am, I didn't realise that the problem was that I was trying to run it from a Windows dirve (D'oh! This was b4 I got the 'net up in Linux). I realise that this is a longshot, but it might be the problem.

After I reboot my system, I just get dumped into the login prompt, mode 3. X won't run. Then after I login, every so often, I get whole bunch of messages on the screen saying something like "...x too fast, waiting 5 minutes" Sorry, I guess I should have the complete message. I have no idea what it means. I tried running the config after I reboot to genenerate the new config file. I put the file into /etc/X11 directory, but it still does not help.

My computer has two HDD, 1 IDE and 1 SCSI. All of my Windows stuff is on the IDE. And all of my Linux stuff is on the SCSI.

I will have to try X -version this evening.

Thanks guys/gals.
