Hi everyone from someone who is completely sick on Windows & new to Linux.

I just recently got Lnx4Win (I want to sample before commiting :)) and I just love it. The only reason I keep Windows is for my sound apps, which brings me to my n00b question.

I cannot seem to get my ESS Solo-1 sound card to work. On start-up, I see lnx4win loads some ESS driver, and HardDrake says that my "ESS Technology ES1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive" sound card is installed, but, yet, I can't get any sound at all. I was just wondering if anyone could help me with this. Thanks. :)

What does it say when you try to play an mp3 via xmms?

It doesn't say anything. The MP3 will play, but no sound will be sent to the speakers. (I hope I worded that right :D)

I doubt this is it, but let's give it a shot.
Run chmod 666 /dev/dsp and chmod 666 /dev/mixer.

It might be as simple as turning the volume up. I've heard that before. Look in Multimedia in your menu for a mixer. And try this first.

Second problem could be that you're not allowed to use sound. But you're using Mandrake so this is probably not the problem.
(the user is not a member of the group sound)

Being root, type:

adduser username sound

I seem to remember (from my RedHat days... was I ever that young? ;)) that after installing XMMS via RPM, its output plugins weren't configured properly. It was as simple as going into the XMMS config and changing it to the correct one (Don't remember which one it was, but I remember it being pretty obvious upon seeing the list...)

Of course, this would only be the problem if its only XMMS not working. Have you tried any other sound apps to se if you could get anything out of them?

OMG...

I opened this app called "aumix" and found that the problem was that all my volumes were turned all the way down.

I feel like such a n00b. :o

:DBTW, thx to everyone's help and input. :D
