ok i use gaim for instant messaging.

does gaim support text messaging cell phones? i see that none of my buddies from AOL that are cell phone #s appear on my buddy list. do i just have an old version or is there really no support for this in linux?

till date gaim doesn't support text messages for cell phones.
i don't know about AOL but LICQ supports messaging on cell phones over ICQ network. if there is support for ICQ then there might be support for AOL too. try searching for the same ;)
i just checked through AOL site and seems to me that their proprietary software supports mobile messaging. you can check that out http://www.aim.com/get_aim/linux/latest_linux.adp?aolp=

Gaim develops quickly, it's one of the most active projects on sourceforge.

When RH9.0 shipped, I can only assume that Gaim was in it's GTK+ -> GTK+2.x transition. The version that shipped with RH9.0 is now pretty old, but would have probably been the most recent stable at the time.

People that use cell phone aim show up for me in Gaim (v0.72). The AIM running guy icon to the left of the screen names shows a phone thing in the lower right hand corner, similar to the icons that show up when a buddy is on AOL, or is away.
