This is odd.
I attempted to move to 2.4.2 under Slack 7.1. The system uses a USB keyboard - and it worked fine under 2.2.16 but not 2.4.2. I followed directions carefully and got no error messages, but at startup (from bootdisk, thankfully) there was no keyboard, and no eth0 for that matter. I looked at /lib/modules to find that 2.2.16 had a lot of directories and files and the newly made 2.4.2 had very little.
The question is, Can I copy 2.2.16 into 2.4.2 (/modules) safely?

no, it would not be smart to cope old modules. u had usb working under 2.2.x? i didn't think that was possible. when u compiled it, did you set the usb things as built into the kernel or modules? if it was built it, then all the stuff in /lib/modules wouldn't be helpful. you might want to try recompiling, make sure you had everything checked that u needed.
as for the eth0, u need to include the drivers, there should have been an area where u were shown a lot of nics, pick the one thats yours, and you might want to include experimental drivers (i needed to allow them to be able to install ethernet drivers)
