From my searching so far, I think I need to use the pbm driver for my printer, then append " | pbm2ppa".
I'm using slackware 7.1 with the 2.4.0 kernel. I was able to get this working in redhat 6.2. Here in slack I can't even figure out what utility to use to set the driver.
And yes, I know the printer is a piece of crap. I'll replace it as soon as I get new brakes for my truck and pay for my new 19" moniter. :)
