speeding up xdm

the last thing that is displayed before my login is that XDM is starting. The thing is it takes a while for it to come up. I can actually log in and check my mail before the gui comes up... any way to speed this up?

xdm is what does graphical logon, the only way to speed it up is to disable it and use command line. (i dont know if command line logon, and immeidatly 'startx' is faster or slower)
