Used linux on/off for the last 2yrs never really stuck with it.
This time I want to give it a serious run tired of Ms want to make a full switch.
I had RedHat 7.3,Mandrake 8.2,got Knoppix and one
called peanut linux.Chose Mandrake because install process went the smoothest
with few problems after.

Ok 8.2 is old how do I update the software? or are the
latest versions of Mandrake stable? which one should
I get?

If I was you, I'd just download the newest and reinstall. I think the latest Mandrake is 9.something.

The newest one is Mandrake 9.2, i like it, im using now, and it works smoothly, no problems, unless my bro gets on and messes with everything, and tries to use it like windows, but i can always get it workin again. but he can mess up anything. thats a diff. story. Yes mandrake 9.2 is stable, and i highly reccomend it
