C++ IDE

Can anyone recommend a free C/C++ development environment? It needn't be anything special, just something i can start learning on. What about a text editor that will do all the highlighting etc such as emacs but not as big. I have had a look at jEdit but couldn't get it working on my machine. From what i have read it sounds pretty good.

Are you running X or not? If so and you are running kde you could use kdevelop for the IDE and then use Kate for the editor. It does all the highlighting.
