You have opened a large can of worms. First, you will need to write down the BIOS settings for the port the soundcard is attached to. Then, you will have to determine if your card is PCI, SCSI, etc., and configure the kernel to support it. Then find out if your flavor of linux supports that soundcard (check the supported hardware list. Look for Cyrix or VIA chipset, or the card you have installed). Then try the installed drivers for those listings (the Sound HOWTO is a good guide to follow). Also, check your linux distribution's support site, search the knowledge base for information on how to set the BIOS information regarding the port your card in attached to.
Or, go buy a supported soundcard.

Excuse my obscenely limited experience, but if you upgrade to a newer kernel 2.4.X you may find that the configuration is able to be tweaked to incorporate support for your sound card. I've only just resisted the temptation to re-install "the other GUI system", purely because I couldn't get sound working, and re-compiling was the answer for me.
