it seems that i can't ever get programs to compile! what do you have to do? chant some magic spell over top of them before you type 'make'??? what's up? :mad:

Yes.
You usually have to invoke the magic spell of ./configure

i do! most of the time it doesn't work...but this one time it did...but the make kicks back errors

Well what are the errors? Are you missing some libraries or other programs? You will need the dependencies installed before you can compile something.

does every program have different dependencies? isn't there like some big package of used dependencies i can download somewhere? i know that's not likely but still....it would make sense...

Seriously, if your distro is fairly current and you have installed all the development packages, then you stand a better chance of getting software packages to install without problems.

I always find doing a FULL install of my distro the best way to go. Then I just uninstall whatever I know I will never need. I start with 1.4gb and end up with around 1gb after trimming back.
