I just spent hours downloading the new GNOME, to find the install script craps out with a seg fault just after "preparing to install".

I'm using redhat 7. Anyone else have this problemo?

You shouldn't have to put up with that.

You would think with all that money you spent on purchasing Gnome, that the install would be a breeze.

Demand a full refund.

YEAH, that's what I was going to suggest.

Happens all the time to me, however I am running redhat 7.1 fisher beta! And I have a t3 like connection so it only takes 3 minutes to download it all.

Oh well good luck!

Damn rpms...
You could just scrap redcrap and go the debian route.
I used "apt-get" and everything installed just fine! :)

Okay... sorry for gloating.
It's just that it makes me so happy! :D

mdwatts.. I know I didn't PAY for gnome directly, but that doesn't mean it isn't fsking annoying as hell to download something for hours just to have it seg fault.

Sure it's free, but it doesn't work. It doesn't matter how free it is, it still doesn't work. If I had've paid money for it, I wouldn't be here griping, I'd be on the phone with the gnome people.

Just because something is free doesn't mean we should expect it to fail. No where on the gnome page while I was reading the install FAQ did it say 'warning, you could spend hours downloading this just to have it die before install'. No, it said 'if you have RedHat 7 click this link to download and install gnome'.

Sure it's free, but I'm still allowed to complain if it doesn't work the way they say.

You do realize that there are copys of what you downloaded on your hard drive? Like they say:
If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

Yes.. The RPMs are stored in /var/cache/ximian-install

I've tried it many times.. No go. I searched their page to see if there were any packages I needed to upgrade, but couldn't find any info.
Hopefully the next build of the installer will work.

Ah RPMs...THOSE are the crap...not Gnome :) Tar.gz always worked for me when I ran Mandy...never touched RPMS after a sickening experience with some of them. I find Gnome to be an excellent desktop environment!

So manually install the RPM's. If there are missing dependencies, you find it that way. Someone else will need to help you with the order though.

I like RPMs because if I want to remove a program, I just remove the RPM.

Sometimes compiled code isn't easily removed (if there isn't an uninstall script) and it leaves garbage all over your filesystem.

It's not as bad when something installs to one directory with a symlink to the executable in /usr/bin, but that's not always the case.

i downloaded the new gnome a couple nights ago, and it hung up on me too while downloading the packages. i had to restart the installation a couple times, but it did pick up where it froze. after i got it installed, works like a champ (as far as i can tell, i was able to create in icon for GIMP, so that's a huge accomplishment for my newbie dumb ***). oh, and i use RH7.

My point is 'GNOME is crap'.

'Having a problem installing Gnome' would be a little more appropriate.

Give them your exact hardware and installed software specifications and ask them to use your specs to test the installs in the future. ;)

I'm not trying to be sarcastic (well maybe a little), but a little more research before starting a big project as that could save you a bit of aggravation in the long run. Don't just jump into it.

Did you check Redhat's knowledgebase or whatever they have, to see if there are any reported problems with installing the new Gnome on RH7? Other search engines including Google may list problems to expect.

You are always taking your chance with rpm's. I like the ease (sometimes) of them myself.

Anyways, good luck and I hope you eventually get it installed and working.
