I just got off a 4 hour tech support call with Micro$oft, was transferred a total of 11 times, i had to give my contact info 11 times , even tho i had only spoken with about 4 different people, during my last 30 min hold i stumbled across a knowledge base article that solved my problem, and the guy i ended up talking to was argueing with me that it shouldnt have worked! Finally, after much haggling, i did get my incident response money refunded......anyone have bill gate's email addy? i'd like to drop him a line :P

hehehe... So now I'm curious...
What was broke, and how did you fix it?
getting a really annoying error when i tried to do a database restore on a SQL2k box. the remedy was listed as 'install service pack 3', but since service pack 3 was ALREADY installed...i think it kinda threw them off..so out of boredom i reinstalled sp3 and it works fine...for now....

ROFL
hehehe... Sounds to me like a registry key had been changed somewhere! :)
I was in tech support for a while. One of the most fun calls that I would get would be that they booted their system to the error message "While initializing device IOS. Windows Protection Error. Please restart the computer."
On restart the same error message would come up.
For the longest time the only way that people knew how to fix it was to reformat and reload. We had Technet available and it had an article about how to fix it, that actually worked. No one wanted to use it cause it was "too technical" I think was the excuse.
The Fix: Reboot and hit <F8> as it's booting, then go to Safe Mode Command Prompt only. Then go into the filesystem and delete the file rmm.pdr. That file is a dos driver thing that the windows command prompt uses and is dynamic. REboot and the error is gone.
The company that I worked for actually took the time to write a program that did this exact same thing, because if you disabled the sound card in Safe Mode, the system would boot.
It took longer to disable the sound card in Safe Mode in windows than it did to simply fix the problem. :)
Actually, it was about this time that I started using linux because I was tired of dealing with the same problems at home as I dealt with at work. :)
Hope you enjoyed the story. :D
