Hey everybody !

Iam trying to install Mandrake 7.2 on a AMD K6-350 with 196 MB Ram a Seagate Harddisk and NoName Atapi CDROM(40x). I can boot without problems from the CD - then the installation starts - i get the first graphical screen - scanning for SCSI( which i dont have ) - then it says "starting ..."
then " Initalizing CDROM..." And there it stops without any error message . And i think i have tried this now for hundred of times - it doesnt get better . The harddisk is the primary master and the CDROM the primary slave . In the Bios i put the option Pnp OS on "No" .
I tried this CD on another computer ( PI 75 ) and it went without problems . So it cant be the CD
Another hint is maybe that i tried it with RedHat 7.2 as well but this installation stoped with a signal 11 error message .
Can please somebody help me ?
This problem is really frustrating me !

Might be your cdrom problem,

did you try boot your machine with floppy disk? or just install Mandrake via ftp?

Tried it via floppy - doesnt work coz then i get a totally other kernel error which doesnt lead me anywhere either . Because at the moment there is not other os installed on my pc i cant ftp it directly on my harddisk . might the command hdb=cdrom help ?
Thanx

That happened to me as well at first.

it turns out my system is incompatible with the HLT processor instruction. I don't know how common it is, but it might be.

Anyways, try pressing F1 when cd starts up, and type linux no-hlt.

Make sure you have APM and plug and play OS disabled in bios for install, and for me the install went flawlessly after that. I did have to edit grub afterwards to make the no-hlt parameter permanent.

Thanx a lot !
I will try that when iam home . APM is Advanced Power Managment right ? might be a silly questiuon but i want to be sure !

By the way - do you had or have an AMD with a mvpXXXX motherboard as well ?

yea APM is advanced power management...

let us know if it works. I'm starting to think that lots of mb/processor combos might be NT/Linux incompatible, just because they're usually sold to w9x users so problems aren't discovered.

Iam sorry but that didnt work out for me .What worked was that i copied Redhat first on a dos partition and then restarted with Win98 bootfloppy changed to the cdrom and started autoboot.bat in the dosutils folder . Worked fine with me . Ok nearly coz now it jus starts with a lilo bootdisk - but thats fine with me - coz thats something i can prolly solve .
But stil - thanx a lot for your help !

Ok here we go again .
Yesterday i tried to copy a lilo.conf from the floppy in the /etc/ folder - which failed coz there was no lilo.conf on the floppy . then i was looking at this kde desktop as suddenly my screen got black and after a time i saw the login screen again . After trying to reinstall linux it doesnt let me even come to the normal login anymore . it gets stuck or i get to a filesystem repair login . i actually dont know what to do anymore - help ?

Mandrake 7.2 normally uses grub, and that's what I use. Grub puts its files into the /boot folder not /etc. Lilo is probably the same.

If you're that stuck, you might want to try reinstalling and letting it re-format your linux partition.
