Well. I did something wrong. I was just looking at a webpage in Netscape, and all the sudden the system crashes. X stops responding to anything except me moving the mouse (can't click or type ANYTHING). I tried to go to one of my tty terminal screens, but the system wouldn't respond to anything on the keyboard.

So I hit the faithful reset button after waiting a long time to see if it would work it out it's self. I reboot, and everything seems to go ok. It runs it's hard disk checker thing b/c the fs wasn't properly unmounted, and if fixes everything. X starts up, and I log in. Everything seems to go ok, then everything dissappears except the icons on my desktop and my background. No Gnome bar at the bottom, and I get 'Home' to come up. It's up in the very top left hand corner with no title bar or anything, so I can't move it at all.

How do I get all my stuff back? I've got to have my Gnome bar at the bottom of the screen. When I first log in, a weird screen is coming up now. It gives me some kind of error (I think it says Gnome (pager) then something else, but not sure), but just flashes for a second, not enough time to read it all. Don't know what it is. I've got to get my system back up.

You can take a look at the .xsession-errors file in your home directory, there might some clues in the messages logged there.

Does this happen when you're logged in as a specific user, or is the problem global?

The problem is global.

I think sawfish got uninstalled somehow? I dind't do it, the system just crashed, but now when I go into dselect, it's showing sawfish as being uninstalled (and unavaible).

Hmm... now might be a good time to swtich over to KDE... but I think I'm going to get sawfish workin first...

Anyone got any ideas?

If it says it's unavailable, run apt-get update. It may show back up as available once that finishes...
