Playing DVD's In Linux

Hiya all,
After fully converting my pc this week from W***dows to Linux, I have hit a few walls a so to speak, one I've sorted thanks to ATi.

But this one is still bugging me, I am unable to watch DVD's, having tried Xine, that just closes when I select DVD, Mplayer just crashes and Totem just refuses to play it.
So if any one has a suggestion or fix I will be very much appreciated.

What distro are you using?
Did you install libcss and libdvd?
When you run them from the command line, where (if any) are the errors?
Totum uses Xine, so those are probally releated.

With mplayer try
mplayer -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/cdrom

make sure you have all necessary requirements as far as packages .. i had trouble because i didn't have dvdread or decss or something like that installed, i'd get the intro but about the time it went to menu... BOOM , it sounds like your just misisng the libdvdread or libdvdplay... hope this helps

The clue might be in the line "libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable" meaning you don't have dvdcss installed. Do a search for the libdvdcss file.

(if you aren't too attached to Xine and MPlayer - try out Ogle, it has way better interface and way better DVD Menu support)

even weirder stuff, Ive installed the libcss files etc

Looks like your using libdvdcss 1.2.1
Find a newer version, there are many bug reports saying this is a very buggy version and updating to a newer version fixes the problem.

I've tried ogle, and I can't get it to play anything.
Xine and mplayer I have been able to get to work, but mplayer is a little bit too resource hungry for my system. Xine, my system (k6-II 233) barely handles as it is.

Where is the config file for ogle anyway?

w00t, I can finally watch selected DVD's, although some work most dont:(
Xine and Ogle work a treat Mplayer just refuses or just displays some crap on the screen.
Now to get all of them working.

You will find that xine is a very nice DVD player once you get it running. you need to have libdvdnav to read most of the dvd that have navigation menus along with libdvdcss. A good source for these is one of the Penguin Liberation Front web pages. Make sure you download the right rpm for the verion of xine that you are running.

Mandrake 9.1 with original Xine v0.9.18 installation plus MPlayer 0.91-3.2.2.
I played a (I think encrypted )DVD last week from Mplayer just by loading the disk and selecting play DVD from the Player gui. I can't with this partiular DVD, mplayer just opens and closes the video window.
Xine doesn't have the DVD button, so I can't play with that.
If I rip the VOBs to HD, I can read them with Xine, but not with mplayer.
I installed libcss an libdvdread.

I tried to install Ogle, but got the following error:
file /usr/bin/ifo_dump from install of ogle-0.8.5-2.plf conflicts with file from package libdvdread-utils-0.9.3-4mdk

The attached log file is what I get when I rub mplayer -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/dvd

Can anyone either:
1) tell me what's the problem with Mplayer and how I might fix it, given that I played a DVD last week and haven't changed Mplayer, and I can still play AVI and MPEG files no problem.
2) tell me how to get the DVD button for Xine (preferably without compiling, as I have never managed to compile a single package in 2 years of linux use.
3) help me resolve the conflict and install ogle?
