I have used various Linux distros since about 1997. I became quite a command line cowboy. In 2001 I ditched Linux because my usability needs changed and Linux (slackware and madrake) where but a hacker toy for my for which I had no time to play with.
The other day I installed Fedora Linux Core (based on Redhat)
ALL of my hardware was detected and setup expcept for my video card which works splendidly on the default Vesa driver. I have know ditched XP and Office onto an old 333 with 160mb ram. Fedora is on my main machine now and I have very little reason to go to my dedicated windows box. I am very happy. I nearly died when I was able, for the first time, and with no configuration, to burn a cd.
-Life is good. Any thougts on modern DIsttos? What do you use.

There is a problem with RPM out of the box, but there is an update available that fixes it, I don't know if it's been pushed onto the up2date server yet...btw, up2date is now 100% free and you don't need to register to use it ;)
Also, when installing new kernel modules be sure to do a export CC-gcc32 and you should have no problems at all!
I agree, Fedora is great!

Does apt-get work with it?

I never did a kernel install myself and I don't know if I want to do one.For me is doing it the installation script or so I believe :D .When you guys reffer to "do a export CC- ..." what does it means? When I'm prompted at boot should I type that? I also see that this is quite mandatory to install the nVidia drivers.Sorry for the stupid question but I don't understand the term :D
Could somebody put some light on me?Please...

ok,i got it. All you have to do is to export that CC var.OK,OK,silly me!before running the script.I think I was confused about the word "export" , so all you have to do is to type in the console that command, and the default compiler will be set to gcc32.

I have to agree, FC1 is showing some great promise, I did a fresh install, and everything went great, some minor DRI/Mesa issues, but nothing that could not be fixed.
up2date has some major issues, some have been fixed, but some are still being worked on, but one run of YUM, will get you uptodate with all the bug fixes that are available.
Apt-Get works as always flawlessly.
I have a couple of minor issues, I think there is a fix, just have not had time to look for it, such as it will not default to KDE, always goes back to gnome, which is fine for those who like and use gnome, I personally prefer KDE. the only other issue I have is wth the gcc, but I can get around that one easy enough.
but all in all, Fedora is as good as if not better than rh9, but I am not ready to call it rh10 yet :D

Fedora is very good - being lazy I upgraded from RH9 rather than running a fresh install, and just about everything that I've tried so far works perfectly. The newer version of KDE is good, especially Konqueror, and seems to be a bit quicker - haven't tried Gnome yet though.
I've used YUM for the first time as well - every bit as simple and reliable as apt-get.
The only downsides are that Xine and Galeon no longer work - Mplayer's working just fine, so no loss over Xine, but I've not found a browser as good as Galeon, which apparently isn't included with Fedora.

I just finished with the installation. Everything went fine, and fedora runs great. I had redhat 9 on this machine before, and I do think fedora runs faster. apt-get works good, up2date works. Now I need to get my system back to how it was.

I did an upgrade also, suprisingly nothing broke! Not a thing, everything works for me (including Xine)
What kind of errors are you getting with Xine? that is an odd ball problem I believe...
Gnome in Fedora is faster then on Red Hat 9, which is good...and stable. Evolution has some weird problems where it doesn't exit correctly and I can't start it backup without kill the old procs
Yum has been flaky for me, even after the fix...
Overall though, I really like it.
Hi Mahdi,
I've tried Gnome, and it IS quick - a great improvement over RH9. I use KMail - rather than Evolution - which is fine.
I've tried running Xine from an icon and the Menu; the icon on the mouse pointer appears for a few seconds, and the hard disk light flashes a few times, then nothing. Running it from a terminal I get: -
[kev@localhost kev]$ xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.9.22.
(c) 2000-2003 The xine Team.
Built with xine library 1.0.0 (1-rc0a)
Found xine library version: 1.0.0 (1-beta1).
xine: relocation error: xine: undefined symbol: xine_engine_set_param
[kev@localhost kev]$
Running Galeon from an icon or the menu, the same thing happens. However, running it in a terminal produces this: -
[kev@localhost kev]$ galeon
/usr/bin/galeon-bin: relocation error: /usr/bin/galeon-bin: undefined symbol: _ZN20NS_ConvertUCS2toUTF8C1ERK9nsAString
[kev@localhost kev]$
Any suggestions will be very welcome.

This feature doesn't work. If ever I have to add new packages, I have to hunt them myself from the CDs and do an rpm install. Sigh...
Another thingy is that export stuff. I have to remember it everytime I compile a module. another sigh...
(for my Nvidial drivers and HSF Linuxant driver)
After that initial *bumps* I'm now sailing away!
Bottom Line: Fedora really Rocks!

Well it was good at first, but programs freeze a lot. The system will just hang, nothing works. I have to do a hard shutdown =(.

My dad has the same problems with Fedora on his similar system. Personally, I give Fedora one heck of a workout with little or no problems. In fact, I have been running Fedora longer than any other distribution I have used, and I have used and broke them all.
Could you reccomend a Distro for my dad?
I would have him install Slackware but I am afraid that he would be lost long enough to get a bad taste for slackware in his mouth.

For twice already (FC1 and FC2 ), my whole partition got wiped. I was using reiserfs at that time. I don't know exactly what happened but I lost *ALL* my files (most of them are my academic papers). Thanks to FLOPPY disks where I temporarily saved them before the catastrophic events, I managed to restore some (after I installed another distro). From that time on, I gave away my FC CDs to a local LUG here (who are brave enough) so they can have a try.
Right now, I am happy with Gentoo and Slack. I still use reiserfs on that same partition with no problem whatsoever.
So the bottom line:
Fedora for my case doesn't really rock as this thread claims. (Hey this is my own observation. NO flamewar intended.)
For your dad Bogomip2, you can recommend SuSE9.1 Personal. Very easy to setup and needed apps are included.

here my two cents...
i've found fedora to be a... very cool toy. newest of the new software, very fast, good hardware support, etc... but...
bug ridden, compatibility problems, crash prone, etc...
going in knowing that it is a test platform helps... i wouldn't trust any important data to a FC2 installation (although i am a rh sellout using rhel 3 at full retail) it is still a great test platform! i use (and enjoy) FC2, but only on a "spare" machine....
