Hi,

I've got RH 7.1 installed on my lap, however, it did not loaded correctly my sound modules (cs4821); a friend just installed Mandrake 8.1 and he has a laptop exactly the same brand and model than mine, and it *did* load his sound correctly.

So my question is, can i "import" the modules from the mandrake CD's without having to install mandrake?

thanks!

Um, I don't think this would be a problem with the module but with configuration. Mandrake sets up sound automatically I think while RedHat does not, Did you run sndconfig? What errors do you get?

It may work if you are both using the same kernel version and there is only one module involved. If more than one, then you will have to load them in order or you may even need to add them to /lib/modules/2.4.#/modules.dep. There could be other files that would need to be updated.

Could be worth a try though.

Why not just try the sndconfig tool as suggested or if necessary, compile the kernel and add support for your soundcard.

Thanks for the replys..

well, the thing is, the modules RH7.1 comes with for my card, do not work. I've ran sndconfig, and it autodetects my card and everything.. but when i click on the "test", it fails miserably.

I dont want to recompile stuff, as im just learning and havent messed with recompiling kernels much yet! I thought it would be easier, like, to just import the modules from the mandrake CD's..

Thanks!

It could be that the modules have loaded for your soundcard and the reason the test failed, is either your mixer volume is turned down or you need to change the permission of /dev/dsp. chmod 666 /dev/dsp
