x11 error - /lib/ld-linux.so.1: bad ELF interpreter

ive installed the linux binaries for quake, i gave it a go but i got:

[guitarfella@darkness quake]# ./quake.x11
bash: ./quake.x11: /lib/ld-linux.so.1: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory

the file does exist. ive looked around for simular problems but i couldnt get any clear solutions.
