hi guys,

What am am trying to acomplish is when i call my house phone a number or times and my computer is on, i would like it do dial onto the internet so that i can access it without having to be by it.

I will think of the numbers of rings etc later, but im wondering if anyone knows where i can get infomation on the above task.

Thanks

Don't quote me on this but:

I think you need the getty packages. I have no idea how to config them. Maybe help from someone else?

I think that you would run into one problem. Say your computer kicked in after 4 rings. When it starts to dial, wont it get a busy signal because you are on the same line calling your computer?

Couldn't you just set up the pppd daemon to accept a dial-in connection and verify your username and password, then get the info from there on a direct dial-in connection?

I think what he is looking for is a way to have his system connect so he can ssh into it.

Could be a situation where he is at work with a lan connection and no modem and wants to ssh in so he can forward information through an encrypted connection to his work station at work.

I'm just guessing here.

maybe that nasty ol proxy server at work is blocking some of his favorite sites.

The reason i want to do this is because when i am at work i like to use my own machine for certian things via ssh, but the problem is we only have the one phone line in the house so i cant leave it connected to the net.

So my theroy behind it was to ring the house for a set number of rings and get the modem to detect this and automaticaly dial up to the net.

Does that shead a bit more light on the situation fella's?

Thanks
Dave

So what happens when someone calls and just lets it ring for 8 or 10 rings and it's a wrong number?

Thats a very valid point as you know obviously ;) , but i am not to worried about that at the moment i am just seeing the practicality of actually doing it in terms of computing rather than human error and the number of rings etc.

Thanks

On the human error side, there is a solution. At my house, the fax shares w/the voice, but we have 2 numbers on that one line. When someone faxes us, they dial our fax number 555-1234, and the ring sounds like a double ring and we dont pick it up. If someone call our voice line 555-4321, it rings normally, and the fax doesnt pick up. This feature is called distinctive ringing, and your phone company must support it. What I was thinking for your situation is that you could get another phone number that has double rings, and set your computer to pick up only on double rings.

Any luck on finding a app that will do this for you?

If you are successful I pretty sure everyone here would like to know how you did it.
