The last time I updated a kernel via a package manager (rpm) I lost sound, X, and a few network functions. I followed the instructions on mandrake's (v.8.0) webpage to the letter.
I want to upgrade my kernel again, but I want it to WORK afterward.. Has anyone updated his kernel for MDK8.1 yet? If so does everything work?

The first three attempts I made screwed up
1st time : no image
2nd time : no keyboard or mouse
3rd time : no network....
On the 4rth time Every thing was working for normal use, but was unable to mount windows partitions....
Anyway, I know that Mandrake don't mention this, if you retry the compile (wich I'm sure everybuddy does to make it work properly on the first time), you should type:
make mrproper
to clean the tree...
but make sure you save your configuration in an other directotry before...and then when you retry, you can try to modify what you configured before by reloading that file...
Also, I find
make menuconfig
more intuitive than
make xconfig
...
It's up to you...
NB: updating the kernel has more or less to do with the distro you use...
