I am still trying to get the sound to work on mandrake 9.1 the drivers are installed and the card recognised. the trouble is there is no sound. It looks like /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer are missing I have /dev/sound but don't know if the files in it are correct. how can I create these files and link them to my sound card.

thanks for your help

Check if your sound output is muted (default in Mandrake 9.x) in 'Kmix' (multimedia->sound in your KDE menus).

Cheers :)

When I open K-mix it apears with just a blank grey screen. Aumix doesn't open at all.
When I boot up initially, the error message that it can't open /dev/dsp as the files don't exist, comes up. I also can't find /dsp or /mixer in the /dev directory and /dev/sound contains no files or directories. There is a directory called /dev/snd which contains files called controlC0 to controlC7 but I have beeen unable to open them to see their contents.
