Hey,
As you can probably tell I am very new to linux. I've had all i can take from Microsoft so I decided on Linux. Basically I want to put the Linux Mandrake 8.1 Distro onto two cd-r's but I have no idea how to do that. The links always take me to FTP trees. Can anyone whose done this tell me what files I need from the FTP's. Apprently I need two ISO's?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Paul if anything go to the Mandrake download page and look for the ISOs (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#iso). Then just use EZ CD Creater or whatever program burns ISOs that you have in Windows.

Most mirror sites you will come to have the option of binary images or iso files. For ease of use I would definately recommend the ISO files. These are disk images and can be transferred relatively easy to cdr. Once you download the images, you will have to *.iso files. In your CDR program there should be an option to "Create disc from image" Select that, select the appropriate extension and select your file and burn.

My god....

I had no idea everyone would be this helpful. I am currently downloading cd 1 at 200k, so i guess I should be done with the downloads in less than 2 hours. I never thought it would be this easy.
I'll probably post again right before i initiate the install and then after the install. Anyone who wants to post tips on installing mandrake, please feel free to do so. I hear I need to defrag, which I always do before installs anyway, but I am a little worried about partitioning. I've heard people say that it detroys windows sometimes. I want to be able to dual boot so i can still play CS etc...
Please continue to post if you have any info for me at all. :p

resizing partions can be dangerous so back up your data -on the other hand I have never lost data using mandrakes partioning tool-it is pretty user friendly and explanatory ,but as i said back up your data -best of luck ;)

Got partitionmagic? I can get you disk images of the rescue disks for PM 4.0 (doesn't handle Win2K partitions, unfortunately) which you can use to repartition your disk without losing windows.

What version of Windows are you running?

Thanks for the offer, but I think im just gonna back up all of my data and do a new clean install of windows if necessary. My computer is only 4 months old, and I can probably afford to lose my "important" mp3 stuff until I reload it from a cd r. Im running Win98se by the way.

You should really accept the offer for PM4. I have that rescue disk too, and it is incredibly easy to repartition if you have it.

I have been advised to accept your offer. I guess it would just be nice to have them anyway. Do you have a link?

If you want help with installing Mandrake, then try the online documentation at www.linux-mandrake.com (http://www.linux-mandrake.com) as they have user and system reference guides. They should be quite helpful.
