I'm a Newbie and I'm going to get Linux soon because I'm sick and tired of Windows. I have heard if you are a newbie you should first get Mandrake or RedHat... Is there one better then the other? I have heard bad things about Mandrake and RedHat then I hear Adavantages about each. What is really the best of the two overall such as Installation, Setup, etc... And I also hear that you can run into some problems with drivers etc... too. and I wanted a Dual-Boot because I'm still going to have Windows on my Machine... Overall what does it come to as the best of the two...?
Thanks!

Distro NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/distros/distronhf.html)

Sensei, you should really put a link to the distro NHF right on the forum page in big bold letters...

Mandrake 7.2 is what I suggest and my wife likes SuSE.

I been with Mandrake for a while now but been itching to move on.A bunch of cd's I ordered came in today,NetBSD 1.5,FreeBSD 4.2,and Slackware 7.1.I ordered Debian but it didnt come in,thats the one I really wanted to try too!

I heard Suse 7.1 has some new tool built in where at installation of Linux it can move the Windos partition for you. very neat feature, have not seen it working.

If you pick RH 7 or Mandrake 7.2

1 Scandisk windos
2 Defrag your drive
3 Use fips on the Linux CD to create the partition for Linux.

<flame resistant suit>It probably doesn't matter as long as you get a distro with good documentation along with it.</flame resistant suit>

Pick a distro and buy a book with the distro included. The book should explain how things work as well as how to use them.

Good luck!

I started out using Red Hat but got annoyed with it after about 2 weeks. Now i use debian, its harder to use than Red Hat but it rocks so much harder :)

What about feature wise? Does Mandrake or RedHat have more features etc... and the setup and installation I always hear good and bad things happen so overall what would be good for a newbie to start that has the most features and power? I really dont want to get both Mandrake and RedHat cause i'm going to buy them and they are like $30.00 each. And I would think it would take a long time on a 56k modem to download it... Or is there a place where I could buy it cheaper? Thanks!

Cheapbytes (http://www.cheapbytes.com)

You can get it cheaper at cheapbytes, but I wouldent reccomend going that way for a first install. You get almost no documentation (the only thing you can buy cheap from cheapbytes is the CDs, no manuals, etc). I would reccomend buying a boxed set of Mandrake 7.2. It has been known to be slightly more stable than Red Hat 7, plus you get the documentation on how to install it, as well as some basic stuff on using linux.

One thing I'm also looking for is "Features and Power" does RedHat have more features then Mandrake or visa versa? I'm willing to learn too.

I've used both Mandrake and RedHat so far... and from my experiences, Mandrake has been better in every way... but I'm still a stupid newbie; I can't even get Linux online yet

Libranet looks the best. Check it out. I'm downloading one right now. It is made by the commercial arm of Debian project and the CEO is Debian lead developer Ian.

Well. I think I have came to my decision. I will probably get Mandrake first to get use to Linux then go to Redhat. Would it be hard to upgrade from Mandrake to Redhat? When I'm ready to do that.

There's realy no reason to go to red hat if you use mandrake. They're practicly the same thing, except that mandrake is slightly easier to install and use.

Normaly, people start out with mandrake then move on to either  Debian  or Slackware. Both of which are slightly more advanced.

Take Mandrake. I'd say redhat, but supposedly Mandrake has a little more support, and Redhat has a small problem dual booting. It's nothing serious. If you use Redhat, you'll have to do some partition adjusting, or reinstall lilo, or something like that.

Mandrake is a make partition, make swap, and go. Good luck.

Oh, and I personally use Slackware. :)

The Final Verdict:
Mandrake
I thank you for all your support!

Once you're finished learning the basics, you can move on to the final plateau...
